[ICOM] Pro display acting up

Posting this for a friend who has a 3 1/2 year old Pro
which never had a problem until now.

The display began going from bright to dim to bright
to dim several times and then all black. This happened
after the radio had been on about 10 minutes. He
continued listening on 75 meters for 30 minutes and
turned the rig off after the display remained black.

Two hours later he turned the rig on again. The
display was black, but then it flickered a few times
and stayed all black.

Any ideas, or is it off to service?
