But my FT-7800 doesn't need external filters to accomplish the same thing -
that (to me) makes it seem like there is a design flaw in this radio - which
is what the original poster asked.

It is true that the front end is very sensitive.
Tightening the squelch will also reduce the gain of the front end and that
will help a lot!!  I use one of the I.C.E. (think that's the name) reject
filters and that helps a whole lot.  Many areas of extreme RF density here
in Oklahoma City and I hardly hear any IM anymore.  The filter has two
reject sections at 153 MHz and one up near 157 MHz.  Cuts the sensitivity
down on local police reception but NOAA weather broadcasts and UHF are
basically unaffected.

It's a great rig if you're in a "quiet" environment.  It's terrible if
you're in an area with lots of RF (paging systems, hospitals, etc.) as it's
very susceptible to intermod.
