Mike,

As you suspected, it does appear that using the exciter's tuner via the PW1
creates problems.
I spoke with Orin in Icom Tech Support today, and he checked with one of the
techs to confirm this was the cause.
Icom was understandably not keen on my working on the unit, but since I have
workshop equipped for SMD work I took the change.
Apparently this will take out R7 on the PW1's splitter board.

Checked with Icom parts and the resistor in question is not available, they
quoted me a 3 month wait!
Also checked with Mouser, have to buy a reel of 4,000.

So the next step was to replace the 4.7K surface mount device with a 1/4
watt leaded component.
I carefully trimmed and formed the leads to make them as short as possible,
and soldered in the replacement.
By the way, you were correct, the defective resistor came out in three
pieces.
The resistor is not bad to remove, and there is plenty of room to solder in
the replacement.

So, the moral of the story, don't use the rigs tuner, use the PW1 tuner
unless you are in bypass.
Keep a least one spare resistor on hand just in case.

Thanks again for the help, perhaps this will be assistance to someone else.
