Well, then one possibility is that the encoder (light source andor 
photosensor) has failed. I suppose you could scope the sensor line
as you rotate the knob; you should see some dozens (or more) of 
pulses per turn of the knob. If you _do_ see good output from the 
sensor, then it's the logic downstream of the sensor, which probably
isn't going to be a lot of fun to troubleshoot.

If you don't see good output, then you only need to find a working 
source/sensor assembly.
