Sometimes a manufacturer will use an available
stock microphone cord rather than insisting on
a "custom" cable. It may simply be that your
particular microphone has an "orphan" cable.
>From the IC-706 Mk II owner manual (page 8)
and correlated (hopefully) with Mike's info:
Pin 1 - +8vdc (PROBABLY NOT USED FOR HM-103)
Pin 2 - Freq UP/DN (UP = Gnd, DN = Gnd through 470 Ohm)
Pin 3 - Rcvr Audio Output (PROBABLY NOT USED W/ HM-103)
Pin 4 - PTT
Pin 5 - Mic Gnd
Pin 6 - Mic audio to XCVR
Pin 7 - Gnd
Pin 8 - Squelch Switch (PROBABLY NOT USED W/ HM-103)

Thank you, Mac. I just opened up the microphone and found the strangest
thing. At the plug end of the microphone cable there is a red wire along
with the other wires. But I opened up the microphone and there is no red
wire coming out of the cable in to the microphone. Very strange. But I will
connect up the other wires. I am just curious why I have a red wire at one
end of the cable and none at the other. There is just no place for it to go.
Thanks again to all who answered. I appreciate your help.
