Hi Tony,
My friend Paolo Odone I1ODP and Igor UN7GM have done some work in this area.
I am attaching two of Paolo's posts to the IC-756Pro3 group on this topic.
Apparently the difference is not earth-shattering - which bears out the late
George W5YR's (and my) contention that in a properly-designed DSP receiver,
the DSP filters do the "heavy lifting", not the roofing filter. Matt KK5DR
has observed the same phenomenon when switching roofing filters on his
IC-7800.
Paolo has promised to send me his final results in a form I can put on my
website.
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Subject: [ICOM] PRO III 6kHz Roofing Filter?
At Dayton there was some discussion that the 6kHz roofing filter from the
7800 could be used in the PRO III to replace its 15kHz roofing thereby
further improving receiver performance (at the expense of giving up the FM
mode in the PRO III). Has anyone done this or know what's involved in doing
it? Thanks, Tony N2SS
