Clete's method is really ingenious!  

Anybody who has a triggered-sweep scope can use it 
to eliminate the need for matching the two tones by ear.

Connect the triggering input of the scope to the audio 
output of the AM receiver.

Connect a vertical input to the output of the 706.

When the waveform stops moving left or right, the two 
frequencies are the same.

This method was used by Western Electric installation 
crews to set the frequency of solid state inverters to 
60 cycles back in the 70's.
