I have noticed this also, when comparing the PROIII with some of the Yaesu
rigs. Some other contesters have mentioned the audio of the 1000D being
especially harsh compared to the PROIII.
If you are a serious low power contest operator, and you operate the ARRL
contests, you will need a small amplifier to go with your PROIII. ARRL
allows up to 150 watts output in low power contest category. After a 24
hour contest, some of the top ten scores are separated by less than 2 or 3
QSOs. The difference between 100 and 150 watts more than makes up the
difference. Don't be tempted to turn up the PROIII power to 150 watts. Use
a small amplifier, and both the amplifier and the PROIII can limp along at
150 watts out.
