   The main tuning knob on my706 seems to have lost its tension. I used to be
   able to slide the mechanical lock down and lock the knob, but now there
   seems to be little difference whether the lock is up or down. Is this
   normal? Is there any easy fix?

Try pushing the knob into the radio, on the shaft.  It just slides.
