Guys, beware!
After 35 years of experience at QRL: solid state finals are VERY
sensitive to overdrive! Increasing the drive level endangers them more than
anything else, besides the fact that intermodulation goes up FAST!
For the most part, equipment manufacturers tend to push transistors
close to the limit so every increase is liable to push them past. Also,
don't forget that it's not only the price, it's also the a matter of
replacement costs and that amounts to much these days.
Remember too that going from 100 to 125 watts is a 1dB increase only,
meaningless from the communications point of view. It's definitely NOT worth
the risks involved.
