Ping is a network tool.  When you ping a site, packets are sent to 
that site and if all goes well you get reply packets.  It's simple yet
one of the most useful tools to determine if a site is reachable or
not.

To ping:  1) bring up a DOS shell.   2)  type in   ping www.icom.co.jp

If you get numbers, its working.  If you get a message saying no
reply you have a problem.

Pinging is useful because if you can ping a site but not get to
the web site, you have a good idea that the machine is up but
the web service is damaged somehow.
