I installed my own power cable in 2001 Outback. There
was a large unused grommeted hole on the firewall. I
just pulled out that grommet, squeezed it between two
pieces of 1/4 inch plywood, and drilled two holes in
it
big enough to pass the #4 wires I ran to the rear of
the vehicle, where the 706's main chassis is located.
I ran the cables along the sides of the body, under
the
trim material (that took some doing - not a quick job,
if you want everything clean and well concealed).
I have looked at 2004 and 2005 Outbacks to see if that
unused grommeted hole is still on the firewall. It
looks like it is on many vehicles, but may vary
depending on engine size, etc. Look for it in about
the center of the firewall, but toward the driver
side, and a bit above the midline vertically.
BTW - My 706 and screwdriver antenna on the Outback
works extremely well. There is relatively little
noise problem from the engine and anciliary equipment.
I've been using it for about three years now, and I'm
well satisfied.
So I think the Outback is a good choice for mobile
hamming. I work just about anyone I want from 75m to
10m, and have gotten MANY signal reports that
expressed great surprise I was mobile. But I'm not
trying to
compete in DX pileups, of course; that would be VERY
difficult most of the time I would guess.
