Hello Sam!
A fan on the rear of the 781 will not help power supply heat problems. It will only help the tremendous heat problem of the power amplifier section. Power supply heat problems can
be helped by removing the internal speaker and mounting a fan there.
You are taking on a noble project by drilling the rear chassis, but the Sherwood fan mod is so slick and easy to do, I would highly recommend it over drilling things yourself. I
am using the Sherwood fan kit on all of my 781s. The temperature reduction with the fan during a 48 hour contest is phenomenal! It looks very Icom stock and does increase the
resale value of the radio.
