Doug,
The AH-4 work real nice if you have a decent length whip. I use a
Hustler base section, then a threaded female coupling, then a 102 inch
whip, somewhere around 10 ft tall. It really out performs a shorter
Hustler on 10/12/15/17 meters, is slightly better on 20 meters, about the
same on 30 meters, hurts on 40/80 meters. What I do is pull the 102
inch whip off at night, and put a 40 or 80 meter resonator on, it covers
the full band very easily then. I've experimented with a Huster toward
the front, and this at the back with a A/B switch for several months, and
ended up with the 10 ft combination after seeing how much it out
performed the Hustler on 10-17 meters. Have over 150 countries on
mobile ssb and cw. Probably the most exciting was running a bunch of
Europeans on 40 cw one night as I was driving across Virginia on I77
about sunset for a couple hours. Hustlers are real hard to keep a low
SWR on 80m, it's nice to have the AH-4 at the base, you always have a low
SWR across the band. It needs to be mounted right at the base of the
antenna, or as close as possible. Everything from the antenna
connection on it is radiating. My second favorite spot in a car is to
mount it at the back of the trunk, with the wire just coming into the
trunk a couple inches to connect to the AH-4, or even better is to mount
it on the top center of the trunk (inside), go to an antenna mount in
the center of the trunk with a couple inches of wire, and screw the
antenna on top the mount on the trunk. It seems to be more efficent
that way than on the back bumper, and if you use Hustler coils without a
AH4, they tune up a whole lot better on 10/40/80 meters. There's a lot
of stuff out there, do some experimenting. You will enjoy it.
