Hello Bill,

I have had good success with the Mirage BD-35 dual band amp.  5 watts in gives 45 on VHF and 35 on UHF and it can be used crossband (receive on one band while amplifying the output on the other band).  It retails for $150, but can sometimes be found for as little as $75 used.  I bought one for that price, tried it out and liked it, but preferred a real mobile radio for mobile use and ended up passing it on for the same $75 I paid.
