[ICOM] Loose parts

Hi Mike:

I have not looked inside my Pro II yet, but I have worked on several other Icom radios. The metal shield is soldered to the PC board. It is there for a very good reason and it should not be removed.

You can re-solder the clip with a 40W or similar soldering iron. Make sure that you clean the area on the shield where you are going to re-solder the spring clip, as well as the spring clip itself. Alcohol is a good cleaner and the solder will make a stronger connection if you lightly sand the spot before you solder to it.

Tin the spot on the shield and make sure that the solder flows well when you re-attach the spring clip. Be very careful that you do not over-heat the shield and cause the shield's solder connections to the PC board to melt. The metal shield needs a good electrical connection to the PC board to function properly.

  Hi Woody -
I think you're right. At a closer examination, it looks like the bright
plating on the spring peeled. Wonder if there's anytning under or
attached to the square "can" that would be damaged by the heat of
soldering? I don't see an easy way to remove it, short of taking out the
board (shudder) it's mounted on. Still speculating on it's importance.
  Thanks,
  Mike
