Set it to 1 stop bit. Only Yaesu requires 2 stop bits. If you set it to 2, under some circumstances you will lose data or radio control. YMMV.

The author didn't mention what software he was trying to use. Be aware that the three models of 706 all have different addresses and the same address on the radio and the software is necessary. That is the feature of the CI-V bus, it allows many devices to talk to each other. If your software just says 706, it may just mean the original. The address on most late model Icoms is programmable, if you need to change it. The actual address means nothing, it's just that the canned software assumes the default for a particular radio, when in fact you can set it to virtually anything except the address that the software uses.

The CT-17 is just a level converter, there is nothing to program or talk to, it is the software on the computer that talks to the radio, so most of the configuration is on one of those two.
