Hi Ron,
I agree with your assessment of the R-71A, I always
thought the radio had great audio. Maybe there are
still some minor issues with it.
The Kiwa mod is great if you are going to do it
yourself, as it's mostly a labor job. If I recall, the
parts kit is about $20 or so, so the investment in
parts is minimal. If you had to pay someone the labor,
then it gets a bit expensive.
It will be a fun mod, and you'll definitely learn your
way around the R-71A by doing it. I would recommend
laying out all the parts beforehand, as the capacitors
may come from different manufacturers and the
different marking schemes may be a little weird at
first. That's what I remember anyway.
By all means, keep us posted on your progress, and the
results of the mod. Your experience with the radio
before the mod will be much more meaningful when you
get to check it out after the Kiwa kit is installed.
Post back and let us all know how you like the mod,
and how well you think it works!

Frank, the R71A's audio is pretty good actually. It
was just when I did the A / B comparison, did it's
audio seem lacking to that produced by the R7000.
When I bought the R71A, I was assured that the radio
was "100%". I was in the process of moving, so my shop
was all boxed up and I was living in my motorhome. I
was VERY disappointed in the sensitivity, considering
everything I had heard about this radio.
I sent it to Scott Malcolm at MTS and told him to 'go
through it'. He found a few bad parts, a transistor
and a handful of caps. It works really well. Kiwa
said that their 'fix' doesn't solve all the radio's
audio problems, some of those are a design issue. I
just wanted to know if the improvements were worth
the $.......
Think I'll try one, just for grins...
thanks again!
