Um, before you plunk down the money for it, it might be a good
idea to make sure that Icom America will service it. I also wonder
if there are any FCC type acceptance issues?

I bought a new 706g in Tokyo when they first came out. Only on the flight
home, did I realize there IS a difference between the "Japaneese & European"
models versus the "USA versions". The non-US radios, do not use the top 1/2 of
the 2 Meter band. I was able to modify mine by removing some of the steering
diodes. My radio now recieves all of 2 Meters but will NOT transmit on the top
2 Mhz. This doesn't matter to me since I have a ton of other 2 Meter FM
radios.
It appears that the radios use different processors and simply removing
diodes ain't gonna be all that's required.
My 756PRO (also purchased in Tokyo) was identical to the USA models EXCEPT
it WILL re-transmit audio recorded over the air. This feature was added in the
PRO II or III.
So I guess mine is a PRO 1.5.... ha ha
