Hi Tony,
My experience with modern, solid-state radio gear is that its performance
does not deteriorate over time. There are relatively few alignment points
compared to older valved equipment. Section 4 of the 756Pro2 service manual
shows only 3 receiver alignment points.
Especially in the case of DSP-based transceivers such as the IC-756Pro
series and IC-7400/746Pro, selectivity and other major receiver parameters
are hard-coded in the DSP firmware.
My station consists of a 3-year-old 756Pro2 driving a 6-year-old Quadra. I
have never opened the Pro2 case, and every two years I clean the interior of
the Quadra to remove accumulated dust and dog-hair.
Icom Service advises realignment only when a component in a signal path
requiring such alignment is replaced. The old adage was never truer:
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Hi all,
My 756 Pro II is nearly two years old now and (touch wood) works well
indeed. Do these transceivers need a good service every now and then??
Whilst I am sure all works fine, certainly on the transmit side one often
wonders if the receiver side need a tweak up every now and then?? This might
sound like a "daft" question but I would appreciate peoples views. The
complex nature of these high tech radios is well beyond my ability to
services them.
