John-
You will not get a consensus on this question because you will get pro Yaseu
on the Yaesu reflector and the same on the Icom reflector. I owna FT-1000D
and have had a MKV also own a ProIII, owned a ProII. I like them all. I
also have a 775DSP (Great rig). I love the dual (true dual rcvrs) rcvrs on
the 1000D and I LOVE the scope on the proII/III. I have been licensed
since 1956 and am a ragchewer and avid DXer. Not much on contests. Any of
the above will do the job with no problem. As with all rigs, the anternna is
the biggest factor. I have a TH11DX log periodic by hy-gain. It is a
compromise in that it covers all HF bands from 20m up thru 10. You have
trade offs with that type of ant but I love the TH11DX very much.
All said, I like the scope feature on the ProII/III above and beyond any
other difference between the rigs. It is really neat to be setting on a freq
monitoring and seeing a signal pop up a few KCs down and you drop down and
find a rare one calling CQ. You get him first and throw the rest to the
dogs. You would have never known until it was too late that he was there.
I can promise you that if you have never had or seen this feature in action
that once you do you will be sold. Plus the ProIII is a great rig in itself.
Also have the PW-1 and with that combination plus a logging program like
CommCat www.commcat.com you will be totally automated and it will be like
killing fish in a barrel.
But if you are like me, you already have an idea of what you want to get and
you are just looking for someone to say the right things to back up your
thoughts. So, regardless, get one and have fun. They are all great rigs.

You read about all these terrorists...most of them came here legally, but
they hung around on expired visas, some for as long as 10-15 years. Now
compare that to Blockbuster: you're 2 days late with a video and those
people are all over you. Let's put Blockbuster in charge of immigration.

Subject: [ICOM] FT1000 MK V vs. Icom 756PROIII
I am looking to get a dual receive HF rig in the next
year or so, and am trying to select between the
FT1000MKV (or probably the Field, given the internal
PS) and the Icom 756PROIII. Any idea which would be
better for causal contesting and more serious DXing?
Could possibly consider the PROII also, but the PROIII
sounds like it has some very nice improvements.
