causal contesting and more serious DXing?"
==========
I have both the ProIII and the original FT-1000MP. I prefer the ProIII
for contesting and DXing, mainly because the ProIII has much better audio
clarity, especially on CW. The MP's audio on CW is "mushy" (for lack of
a better word). Also, the ProIII has adequate receiver gain so that when
you use some of the front panel selectable attenuation to eliminate those
annoying IMD3 blips and bleeps, you don't have to have the audio gain
wide open to hear those weak signals. You also have to use some front
panel attenuation on the MP for the same reason, however when doing so,
the weak ones are not loud enough for the haedphones even with the audio
gain wide open..

I've never tried a MK V or a Field, and perhaps they have better audio.
The INRAD roofing filter mod for the MP/MKV/Field would probably improve
that radio IMD3-wise, but I doubt that it would improve the audio.

Before the ProIII, I had a ProII and also preferred it over the MP.
