Randy -

I would bet that it needs to be a linear taper pot, based on my 
tinkering with CB to 10-meter conversion rigs.  Linear taper means that 
the resistance change is even across the entire rotation of the pot, as 
opposed to audio taper, where the resistance change is smaller for the 
first 1/4  or so of the pots rotation.

Did you check with Icom America for the part?  I've been surprised that 
they have had parts for my elderly Icoms.  Also snug down all the 
circuit board mounting screws while you have the rig apart.  Loose PCB 
screws will cause a 730 to do all manner of strange things, although 
probably not make the RIT malfunction.
