John,

I have an FT857D and my trusty'ol 706MKII. I have
seldom used them on 70 cm or 2 m, but run them both a
lot on HF.

Plus points of the MKII
------------------------
Ease of operating. It is very easy to figure out the
menus
Very robustly built
Large display
Can handle a lot more SWR

Plus of the 857
---------------
Excellent Rx and an effective DSP
Low current consumption
Somewhat smaller

I like both these radios. If you are looking for a
very critical opinion, please check the eham review or
the comparisons on the FT857 user group on
yahoogroups.
