[ICOM] pw-1 question

You didn't say anything about hitting the "tuner" button on the PW-1 and how
can the PW-1's tuner know when the swr has reached minimum without a carrier
from the exciter? When hitting "transmit" on the 781 while in ssb mode, no
carrier is transmitted. I'm still in the dark here or maybe just plain dumb.
It is hooked up per the manual with both the acc cable and data and the
bands do track properly.
I just verified my findings by switching to an area of 75 meters that I
never operate, where the swr is high, having the 781 in LSB mode and hitting
the transmit switch. Of course, nothing happened since I did not speak into
the mic, and no power output occurred. Then I switch to CW, hit the key and
observed the swr meter on the PW-1 start at 2:1 and quickly drop to 1 as it
tuned. My conclusion is that it will not and can not perform the tuning
function with a carrier from the exciter. Yet I think you guys are saying
that it will. What am I missing here?
