I use a clearspeach box and it works well for me. I use it in the mobile and
it removes 90%+ of powerline noise etc. It does well with common noise and
any cyclic repetitive noises. When you turn it on, it takes 1-2 seconds to
"learn the noise" then it just disappears. Try their website for a demo. I
think West mountain Radio sell them. If you can't find the info on them
email me at scott at vzandt.net and I'll dig it up. There are two versions
either with or without speaker. I use the one without and plug either
headphones or an external speaker into it.

I would like to know if there is a filter that I can buy or build that will 
remove the hash noise (fried egg sound as i call it) that I can put into a 
external speaker or headphones. If I can't build one, can anyone recommend a
