The 706 will work fine with an external amplifier as Adam stated. When I 
worked at Icom we always recommended an interface unless it was an Icom 
amp.. Ameritron has a nice one  the ARB-704
SultanTronics  also has one that works fine. And many others have built 
some. I am sure others here will chime in with suggestions.
