[ICOM] IC-2KL / PS question.

Hi Mike,

With the step-start circuit, the 64000 uF 63WVDC electrolytic should do
fine. In fact, the regulation (and consequently the linearity) should
improve slightly.

You may want to increase the dissipation rating of the step-start series
resistors if they show any signs of "cooking".

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Subject: [ICOM] IC-2KL / PS question.

Fellow ICOMers, I have a question.

The main capacitor of my IC-2KL / PS is showing signs of decay. It is
47,000 uf at 63 VDC, 85 deg C, 2-1/2 x 4-1/8 inches.

ICOM no longer has that item. An internet search shows a number of
capacitors listed that will work. Unfortunately, there is always a snag.
Minimum order of $250, or currently out of stock, or none anywhere, minimum
quantity of 10 needed to produce.

I have found a supplier who went way out of their way to look for me. All
they came up with was 64,000 uf at 63 VDC, 85 deg C, 2-1/2 x 4-1/8 inches.

I was worried that the much larger cap value might cause problems with the
inrush current. In looking at the PS schematic, It has a soft-start
function consisting of two resistors and a relay. I think it will handle
the cap just fine. However, there is a ton of wisdom on this list and I
wanted to see if I am missing something.

Input and constructive criticism welcome.

GARY ??? <grin>

Once in it, I do intend to replace ALL the electrolytics. I have of can get
the others easily.

Thanks Y-all.
