John,
Eventually the following info might be of some help for you and who knows,
maybe the value of your radio will get somewhat higher..
Apparently I have had exactly the same problem with the 740. From time to
time the power was going down but coming back to normal when the top cover
is removed. For months I was breaking my head trying to find out what's
going on but all in vain. One beatiful day I've finally found the problem!
If you open the top cover having the radio face to you, in the left lower
angle you will see a thin cable going from a unit on a left vartical panel
to the power amplifier, i.e. to the very back. It goes along the unit with
the filters installed.
In my particular case right on the corner the cable was not going around the
aluminium case of the radio, but it was a little bit atop of the angle of
the aluminium case. Accordingly when the top cover is tighten, the cable
appeared to be pressed between the aluminium case and the cover. As the
angle is sharp enough, the cable was a bit flatten and the cable shield and
the inner conductor were shortcut... When I released the cable and put it
freely around the angle, not atop of it, I forgot this problem at all.
Well, It happened to me. But as long as it happens with you, too, it might
turn to be a typical problem for the 740.
Hope it helps.
73,
Vladimir EU1SA
