Jim,

Set up the VFO and tone the way you want it, make sure it works if possible
then over write the memory channel with the VFO contents as if you were
programming it for the first time.
Make sure you have the tone enabled before you program the VFO contents
into memory. Choose the tone frequency and turn the tone on while in VFO
mode, only then program the desired memory channel.
Page 33 of the manual tells you how to program the memory channel which I
suspect you already know.

Another way if you want to change the tone and not tune the VFO to the
desired frequency is to put the radio into memory mode and write it back to
VFO, called " Transferring Memory Contents " on page 35 of the 2710H
manual. You do that generally by pressing the same button you use to
originally write the memory channel [ S.MW ] and holding it down for a
second. Now you can dial up a new tone frequency and reprogram back into
memory by pressing the MW button again.

Hope this helps. If you need more detail tell me what memory channel and
what is in there now frequency and tone.
