Hi Greg,
My choice would be the IC-756 - if you do not require 2m capability.
I had an IC-756 in my station for nearly 3 years; it worked flawlessly. The
only disadvantages I recall are the lack of an IF notch filter inside the
AGC loop, and the relatively poor vertical sensitivity of the Spectrum
Scope. The front end is excellent. If you mainly operate SSB, you can
install the FL-222/223 filter pair for a tight 1.8 kHz SSB passband.
Dark horizontal lines can sometimes appear on the IC-756's LCD screen. The
LCD module is no longer manufactured, but I understand that Icom has ordered
a new production run from the vendor (Sanyo).

As I have never owned an IC-746, I cannot comment on it. Perhaps others on
the reflector can assist.
You may also wish to take a close look at the IC-756Pro. It is now quite
well priced on the used market. A Pro will end up costing very little more
than a 756 with additional filters.

Cheers for now, 73,

Subject: [ICOM] IC 746 IC 756 Question
Hello:
I am seriously considering buying a used IC 746 or IC 756 radio. Not the PRO
versions.
Have heard that there is an Icom in this series to avoid. Something about
receiving problems as in weak receive sensitivity and flimsy front end. Can
some one fill me in on the details? Which one(s) got the bad rap?
Thanks
Greg
