Hello Hart,
There have been a few replies to your initial question, all of which haven't
really explained the situation to you. I will make an attempt.
All the IC-751(A)'s have capacitors used in manufacture in the PLL section
that deteriorate over time, the only solution to it is replacement. It is a
common fix for these transceivers that probably most of us that own them
have had to do at one time or another. It may affect all bands or only
some. In my case, all bands from 30 metres upwards sounded like Donald Duck
and on CW mode I thought someone had a wood saw running somewhere.
I can't tell you the details or how to go about the repair as I returned
mine to
Icom and had them do the work plus a few other service items on the rig all
at the same time.
It is an issue that someone released a service update about as I remember
seeing the same in the past. Also bad capacitors appear on some frequency
display boards as well - there has also been service information release
relating to this.
Just one of the signs of age but by no means 'past it'
Hope this helps explain why the rig is behaving the way it does.
Best 73, Des - VK3DMP.
