I know that's the way Icom handled it.  Only an
individual ham could do it by individual segments.
It's not cost effective for commercial repair,  BUT
it is valid for an individual NON-commercial repair
from a cost-avoidance standpoint.

Icom only ever replaced the entire display. I never looked to see they were 
individual segments. I do remember once several years ago, those displays 
went out of production, Icom America asked Icom Japan to reconsider so IJ 
had more made. I don't know if they are still available though.
