[ICOM] Grounding

Before Dick kills this thread...
I am not an engineer, but I was always taught that lightning ground systems
were in place to prevent strikes, not conduct them to ground.....Am I
incorrect? It seems to me that even a number 4 conductor couldn't pass the
voltage and current from a strike safely to ground.

My QTH was hit only once, and the strike entered the house on the GROUND leg
of the AC service.. about 12" from the ground (dirt) it jumped to a run of
300ohm twinlead and my brandy new Sony TV went poof. the AC service ground
rod was 24" from where the strike wandered and the rod was co-bonded to my
copper 1" water line at the same point...
