A material like that, maybe thicker, is not that far fetched of a soultion. 
Here's a link to a company that makes something that may be useful. Its 
optically clear, 7.5 mil thinck and you can cut it and place it where you need. It 
adheres by static cling like Saran Wrap, I guess.

I have never seen it on electronic equip but I have seen it protecting 
finishes for the "Sunday Motorcycle Racer". 

May work, may not, but interesting to find out more.
