[Icom] 775 question

Lets hope that nothing important in this world depends on your memory,
Andy.
The spur generated by the 775 on the RX frequency when operating split
with dual receive enabled was well documented on this reflector by many
775 owners, including several who took the time to measure it with
professional equipment and report that the spur's magnitude exceeded FCC
limits, as well as Icom's. Icom acknowledged the problem, and
immediately provided a fix for low-band operation, but later discovered
this correction to be ineffective on the higher bands. DXers across town
reported my 775's spurs on the receive frequency at S9 on 12 meters.
Eventually, Icom did solve the problem, but it involved limiting the
transceiver's maximum QSK rate; since I found that tradeoff
unacceptable, Icom gave me a full refund for a then 3-year-old radio.
While they dragged their feet a bit on this issue hoping it would go
away, they eventually confronted and corrected the problem, which sets
them apart from some other suppliers in my book. I have continued to
purchase and use Icom products. I also provide free station automation
software that supports the entire line of Icom HF transceivers; see
www.qsl.net/dxlab .
As technically proficient consumers, we can constructively influence the
quality and functionality of products available to us. This requires
direct, forthright, accurate, and sometimes aggressive interaction. I
never understood your dismissive, disdainful attitude towards efforts to
have Icom correct an admitted product defect. From your remarks below,
its evident that you learned nothing from the earlier experience; any
one considering your opinion should be mindful of this bias.

Hi Dick-
Don't know who W8JI is but I would not take one amateur "review" as
definitive. I've never heard of anyone having a 775 problem when
operated properly with an amp. The only 775 "problem" I recall was a guy
named Bernstein claimed that if you operated CW with a very tight split
at 1500 watts, a neighbor ham a few blocks away could hear a "spur". I
never had any such problem. Maybe try Google?

| The power spike was discussed by W8JI on one of the reviews on eham on
| the 775. It was an earlier unit. He also discussed VFO bleedthru which
| I too experienced on an earlier 775 serial 19-- owned several years
| ago. I recently found a late serial 27-- 775 and before I use it with
| the
AL1500
| wanted to be sure the spike problem was corrected.
| I do turn the rf power back to about 30 watts but would hate to blow
| an expensive tube with over 200 watts momentarily hitting the tube.
