      Firmware udpate announced

I received a letter from ICOM Japan. ICOM has scheduled a firmware
update in this coming September. The update includes some improvement on
NB and readability for low bands. Detailed information is not disclosed
yet, though. The procedure of the update is just like that of PCs. The
user downloads a binary image from the ICOM web site and applies the
update to the radio. However, the letter does not mention if it is done
through RJ45 port on the back or through the compact flash on the front.
In addition, ICOM needs to apply some mod in the radio to enable the
on-site firmware update function, so the user will be asked to send
IC-7800 back to the ICOM factory by September. I am not sure this is
needed only for the first lot of IC-7800 sold in Japan. I received an
answer form ICOM Japan. ICOM will inform all the users who have the mod
required unit (not only JA but any countries). Units recently sold in
the world, however, does NOT require the mod. If you have IC-7800 and
would like to know whether the mod is required or not, I recommend you
make contact with the dealer or retailer you dealt with.
