Commander will let you control all of the basic functions like
frequency, mode, filter selection, split, and dual receive for the 756
(and any other Icom HF transceiver with CI-V control). Commander also
allows you to define up to 16 command sequences, each of which can be
invoked by clicking a button. Command sequences can include conditional
branches, and have the ability to recaption labels; thus one can setup a
single button that toggles between Ant1 and Ant2, with the button
caption indicating the current selection. User-defined command sequences
could also be used to control the frequency step or the scanning
function.
Commander is entirely free, and available via www.qsl.net/dxlab .

Dave, AA6YQ

Carl,
Absolutely. Those settings can easily be manipulated
without a display. The real problem with a 756 is that
the various softkey functions that are transparent, a
good example would be ANT 1/ANT 2 selection.
