"every now and then one gets zapped" could well be because the Max232's
TTL output is not designed to drive an open collector bus, which is what
CI-V is. Next time you build one, use a 7407 section between the
Max232's pin 12 and the CI-V bus..

Yup. I've built four or five of them in the last 10 years. Every now
and then one gets zapped, or I give one to a budding contest operator.
