[ICOM] 756 Pro antenna tuner problem

I have a problem with the internal tuner in my 756Pro --
This morning I was tuning around 40 meter phone and noticed the internal
tuner was no longer functioning. It was working fine last night when
I last used the radio. I usually run low (about 50 watts) power
and the reflected on my antenna is not much (couple watts). I double
checked my power output and reflected power with a Bird wattmeter
and confirmed I had no more than 3 watts reflected at the time.
Switched antenna ports. Same thing, tuner attempts to tune, but
when tuning SWR on meter remains high and tuner stops after a
couple seconds. Pulled up the service manual and started to go through
the tuner alignment procedure, performed the first part of nulling
the detector with C3 -- BUT when I got to step 2, the radio would
not go into setup mode. I reset the microprocessor, tried holding
down SSb and CW keys whilst turning on power, still no dice.
Still no tuner as well. Any other suggestions other than simply
sending it back to Icom? I have a whole communications shop
at my disposal, but it does me no good if I can't check the tuner
module more thoroughly since I can't get to the calibration mode.

thanks
