[ICOM] RE: Icom Digest, wanted list of mods for ic 765 ic 756 pro

Hi Kevin,
Here is the link to Don VE3HUR's IC-765 Notes, probably the best collection
of IC-765 mods and tips around. You can also download service manuals here.
The PBT mod is a "must".
http://www.qsl.net/icom/manuals.html
On the IC-756Pro II, two full coverage transmit mods and a fix for the 6m
oscillation problem (possibly in the European variant) are listed in
http://www.mods.dk/. As the DSP firmware pretty well determines the
performance of the IC-756Pro II, I am not aware of any aftermarket mods to
"bring the radio up to a ham's standard". It is already pretty well there -
as well as being quite satisfactory for large numbers of non-amateur users.
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Importance: High
Wanted listing of mods that improve these radios IC-765 and the 756 Pro ll
is there such a list and where can one find it I'm considering buying a new
rig but want it up to date like all radios when they come out there not up
to a hams standard noise weak ness's in designs & flaws that we hams do not
like. So if some could help it would be very nice to have this knowledge of
these radios as what mods need to be done and how or who can do the mods
that will bring them up to par with a hams standard of performance.

I am keeping an eye out for an HF radio. What would be a good one to
get? Like the most bang for the buck without spending an arm an leg on
one? I know the Icom 756Pro, 775, 781, 746Pro and others are good but a
little too much $$. What would an older good radio be? Something good
for DXing and contesting.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The 740 is pretty good. Nice quiet receiver. Seen
some good deals on them recently also.

I like any of the icoms from the 730 series... 730, 735, etc. They sell
on eBay for about $400.
If you push it just a little more, for about $500 on ebay, the 706 MkII
are available. The original 706 are a bit less. It all depends on what
you can handle and want.

The 756 lacks its successor's DSP, but its dual receive and LCD spectrum
display can be handy in a pileup. You also get 6m and a built-in
auto-tuner.

Hi Renee,
The following page on my site may be helpful:
http://www.qsl.net/ab4oj/icom/oldicom.html
I agree with John's suggestion of the IC-740. The IC-745 and IC-751A are
also worth considering. The IC-765, which is a self-contained radio with
built-in mains PSU and autotuner, is an excellent choice (with the PBT Mod).
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Hi Dave,
Don't mean to be argumentative - but the IC-756 does incorporate a DSP unit
in the final IF. The functionality of the IC-756's DSP is less than that of
the Pro series; even so, it performs all modulation (except FM) and most
demodulation tasks (except AM, FM). In receive, the DSP does noise reduction
and auto-notch filtering; in transmit, it performs audio equalisation.
The IC-756 uses crystal filters (FL-80 and FL-96 are factory-fitted). It
accepts one pair of accessory filters (9 MHz, 455 kHz), and offers Twin
Passband Tuning and Dual Watch. At around $800 to $1000, it is a lot of
radio for the money.
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Remember in some models like the 745, 751, 761 and 765
the plastic trimmer caps will eventually need to be
replaced. You might want to check to see if that has
been done. And some of those models also have a RAM
board where the rig will go completely dead when the
Lithium battery dies. This is not a problem in the
761, though.
Along these lines, does the 735, 725, and 728 series
suffer the same plastic caps problem?

Hi John,
Yes, the 735, 745, 751, 751A, 761 and early 765's suffered from the infamous
plastic VCO trimmer problem. I had a later-series 765 (S/N 29XX) which had
ceramic trimmers. Had to replace the trimmers in an IC-751A - a 4-hour job.
My understanding is that the 745, 751, 751A and 761 used the EX-314 RAM
board with lithium-battery backup. In the IC-765, the radio and ATU firmware
are in ROM.
As I recall, the 725, 726, 728, 729, 736, 737 and 738 used ceramic VCO
trimmers. I have owned a 725, a 728 and a 729, and none of these radios ever
showed signs of failing VCO trimmers.
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ
