I have the AH-4 permanently installed in (under) my car. It's partially 
exposed to the outside, get's all the dirt and spray, but works vy nicely 
since several years. I am very pleased with it (in combination with a 
706MkIIG).
As an antenna I use a military whip, these yard long rods which you can screw 
together. Usually I assemble about 5 to 6mtrs for normal operation while 
stationary. Sometimes I use a 10m fishing rod, fastened to the outside 
mirror, or I just attach a randowm length wire.
