[ICOM] 706s swr

You will need to do a few things to get this resolved properly. First
download the 706MK2 service manual from www.mods.dk . Get a plug to
terminate your remote jack in the back of the 706. You will need two dummy
loads. A 50 ohm and a homemade one of 25 or 100 ohms. I have both factory
manuals, the MK2 and G models and there appears to be a mistake in the G
version. In the manuals you will find the procedure for the swr meter
calabration. Follow the 706 MK2 manual as it is correct. Also note that you
need to do the SWR METER CALIBRATION that is in the set menu, NOT the swr
detection adjustment in previous pages of the manual. Follow this procedure
for both radios and they both should read the same. To follow up on the "G"
manual mistake it involves step two of the meter calibration process. In
step 1 you correctly use a 50 ohm load and in step two you should use a 25
or 100 ohm load but the manual says to use a 50 ohm load, basicly repeating
step one. Be careful when in this adjustment mode and double check your
every move as things can get really messed up if you are not careful and pay
close attention to the adjustments you are making. Remember if it aint
broke, don't fix it. GL, Rick. K8DXN
