After I sent off the message below, I realized that, while I'd tested
it, I wasn't 100% sure that I'd tested using the 6 pin miniDIN WITHOUT
the 13 pin plug with the two PTT lines connected together.

So, I tried it, and it does work as I said. The 6 pin miniDIN is the
same pinout as the DATA connector on the FT-817, and is also the same
as the DATA connector that I added to my K2's using EA3BLQ's little
board, but changing one pin on the connector from the way he calls it
out.

That means I can use a single data interface with any of five of my
radios. I also made a "universal" cable for my RigExpert which will
also work with any of those 5 radios.

I have dedicated interfaces for the 706's and a dedicated 706 cable
for the RigExpert, both using the 13pin connector, since those give me
FSK so I can use the 706 in RTTY mode, and also provide an isolated
PTT for keying an amp, but the other interface would get me on the air
in AFSK or the other digital modes, if necessary.

You can just parallel the HF and UHF/VHF PTT lines on the 13 pin
connector. The reason they're separate is that they are also outputs,
and you might want to key separate amps for different bands. If you
use the 13 pin connector, you have FSK keying available on the same
connector, if that matters to you. I've used the 6 pin miniDIN for
AFSK and PSK, but prefer to use the FSK line for RTTY.

I should have an Icom 706MKIIG by the beginning of
next week, and am thinking about ways to hook it up
for digital modes. I see that there is a mini DIN 6
pin jack in the back for digital modes, in addition to
the 13 pin jack. Will this mini DIN handle the
digital modes (including PTT switching) for both HF
and VHF/UHF. The main problem with the 13 pin jack is
that it uses different pins for the PTT switching on
      HF and 6/2 meters.
