[ICOM] How does a LiON battery "die"

I recently acquired an HT which uses LiON battery
packs, and have a question about the characteristics
of LiON batteries.  How does the pack behave when it
is nearing the end of its life.  Does it act like a
NiCD or NIMH battery pack, where it will hold less and
less of a charge, to where it will reach full charge
status quicker than normal.  Or does it just refuse to
even accept a charge-going from pretty normal to dead
almost instantly.  I am not sure if the battery packs
I have are at fault, or if the charger in the radio
isn't working correctly.
