[ICOM] PRO III VS PRO II

Hi Warren,
If you are referring to the transmit speech compression algorithm, this is a
function of the DSP. As the compression process is in the DSP running at the
36 kHz IF, it is a digital IF compressor. The descriptions in the 756Pro and
756Pro2 service manuals are identical. Unfortunately I do not have a Pro3
service manual, but I could not see Icom abandoning the DSP solution for an
analogue IF or RF implementation. Unlike the "original" 756, none of the
Pro-series radios ever had an AF compressor.
Interestingly, the Pro2 (p. 37) and Pro3 (p. 37) user manuals both refer to
the compressor as an "RF speech compressor".
The Pro3 brochure confirms that the compression function is embedded in the
DSP. This is described in "Inherited Properties from the 756ProII". You can
download the brochure here:

There is additional Pro3 information on my site:

>From reports thus far, I am confident that you will find the Pro3 a
significant improvement over the Pro2, especially in terms of receiver
performance.
Enjoyed meeting you in Dayton. I plan to be there next year.
Cheers for now, 73,

Adam...I've been told the new processor in the proIII is much advanced over
the proII...it was suggested that an AF processor had been used in previous
versions...and that an RF processor is used in the III.
This isn't very clear to me and as I am picking up my proIII at the tampa
hamfest tomorrow, I was curious what you knew about this.
Many thanks...and meeting you at Dayton sure was fun...
