Adding to Adam's response just a bit, the 765 represents a major redesign of
the 761. The two radios are superficially similar but differ a great deal in
both architecture and circuit design. The 765 gained a much better computer
control system and lost its PBT due to a patent situation. But that is
readily corrected with a simple mod. I view the 765 as a much superior radio
to the 761.

If you check the original 761 review in QST you will find a number of
complaints voiced. The subsequent review of the 765 shows that the majority
of the former problems were corrected.

My 765 bought in June 1990 is still going strong!
