Met Art Collins many years ago in Dallas as a young tax lawyer working on
the sale of Collins as an independent company. Collins had either a home
office in Dallas or a very significant office that Art Collins spent a lot
of time in--I never got to Iowa.
Art struck me at the time as a rather technical type with much less talent
on the financial and business side. My memory is Collins essentially had to
sell.
This was almost 20 years before I became a ham so I had no idea what Art
Collins meant to a lot of people--he was an interesting character though.
And their primary asset of value was represented as their military
contracts, not the ham business which seemed almost a sideline.

Hi Adam.....by the way, Bill D and I have been swapping barbs for a long
time. I bought an SM20 and SP21 from him as well as a couple other things.
He is a character to be sure..! Send him a joke once in a while to keep his
spirits up..!
RC is doing ... ok .. with some of the contracts they have won lately, I
figured their stock would be higher, but the market won't let it. I had a
good 35 years with them. Worked ham stuff, their Comm Center in Cedar and
several Coast Guard programs before going into Field Service with aircraft
goodies. Used to have an S-3 line with 30L-1, but traded it for the 756
Pro. Not sorry one bit either..! Used to belong to the CCA, but dropped it
with all the inside arguing..! I see Floyd, W8RO at our Antenna Shootouts
in Anderson, Indiana twice a year, but last year he had little to say, since
I did not pay my dues to the CCA..! Oh well..
The Pro is a good radio with great audio, which by the way, sounds better on
the Icom SP-21 than the Kenwood SP-23. I installed some foam in the SP-23,
but did little for the audio on the Pro.
I sold my 740 to a guy in Oklahoma. It was a good radio (had the compressor
problem .. relay) but since I always used a hand mic, I had to have the
compressor on. Also had the preamp switch problem, but even with the parts
to do the mod (I never did) the preamp was not necessary.
A couple of the posts on this subject really were not good. I cannot
believe the way people trounce other radios. Almost makes me want to visit
them and have a more detailed discussion..!
73 ... stay well up there...love your site by the way...
Bill, W0LPQ
