[ICOM] New Pro III - Hold On Guys!

Hi guys,

What is "correct"?

Did Intel design and release the Pentium 4 because the Pentium 3 was
"incorrect", or because technology had evolved since the Pentium 3 first
became available?

Considering the rapidity with which technology is evolving, perhaps the best
way to look at the development and release of new models of any high-tech
product is to admit that during the product-planning phase, the people
involved most probably made their decisions in good faith. The resulting
product was not "incorrect"; by all accounts, the 756 (even with its shaky
LCD module), 756Pro and 756Pro2 have been pretty successful products.

During the product life of each of these radios, evolution continued on its
merry way. The designers learned from field experience what areas could be
improved in the next iteration (without diminishing the product which was
current during this process). The semiconductor manufacturers did not stand
still either. New devices (especially DSPs, ADCs and DACs) hit the market,
and mature devices were discontinued. Customer feedback suggested additional
features.

Thus, considering the rapidity with which computer model changes (many of
them quite radical) whizz by as we watch open-mouthed, perhaps 3 to 4 years
between evolutionary model changes in a DSP-based HF transceiver will fall
into its proper perspective.

I have made the transition from the original 756, to the Pro, now the Pro2,
and will probably acquire a Pro3 once it is past the various test suites.
Thus far, each time I upgraded, I found the newer model offered sufficient
improvement to justify the change - but was not in the least bit
dissatisfied with its predecessor.

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ
