Risks of the "free" market :-)

I have hope since Ten Tec has built hardware that is upgradeable via 
download (Orion) and now ICOM seems to be moving in that direction with 
the 7800.  It is then possible to build good hardware that will last 
longer and use the downloadable software to "upgrade" the rig in 
significant ways.  Of course, there will still be a new hardware cycle 
enabling faster/better/cheaper software upgrades, but it could smooth 
out the bumps.  Demand for such upgradeable radios must be noticed by 
the manufacturers, since their perception is probably that more profits 
are available with non-upgradeable radios.
